CHAPTER 14

A Circle of Kindness

It has always fascinated me how a rainbow forms. In order to see this breathtaking sight, you need two ingredients: sunlight and raindrops. There must first be dark clouds followed by a downpour, and then when the sun peeks through, those warm golden rays penetrate the raindrops and create an awesome arc of colors that stretches across the sky. In other words, something beautiful appears because of a storm. And that’s exactly what happened right here in our little town of McAlisterville.

In the coming days, we began to get donations of food from our loving church family. Laura, who is in charge of organizing meals for different functions, had an entire refrigerator reserved in the church kitchen with our name on it. She planned meals for my family on cards asking for meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, vegetables, and desserts. People would take an index card with a dish on it and by the following Sunday everything for the next week was made and packaged with cooking or reheating instructions written on the container. It was a huge blessing to load up our van after the service to keep our fridge stocked full for our growing clan. Trish had never seen so much food in her life and was overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity. She also had never experienced Pennsylvania Dutch cooking and now had a newfound love! Before long, she was actually gaining some weight, and every pound looked wonderful on her.

It seemed the donation of meals was just the beginning. Our friends Dick and Janet stopped by the house bringing a mountain of paper products: everything from paper plates, cups, and plasticware. No washing dishes here! Then our mailbox began to fill each day with tons of notes and cards, all with loving wishes from friends, family, and church members, along with prayers for Wesley and Trish. Even flowers were delivered, which Trish loved to set in her room. This kind of instant love and attention was something she never imagined, and already it lifted her spirits. Everyone wanted to make sure she and Wesley felt welcomed into our family and that they knew they were loved and cared about.

The early weeks were a bit challenging. There were times when Dan had to be out of the house doing things for his job and I had to work at the hospital. The kids were in school, and we didn’t want Trish to be alone, so several people from church, friends, and neighbors set time aside to come and stay with her. She was still very weak and needed assistance, so they would chat with her, prepare her lunch, fold the laundry, watch TV with her, and even keep track of her meds. Our entire family was experiencing acts of kindness from those around us. The cheerleading booster club at Anna’s school put together a special basket made just for Wesley and delivered it personally. They filled it with all of his favorite snacks along with gift cards to restaurants in the area, mini-golf, and fun family activities.
